As a big fan of genre-mashing and the exciting potential it holds, my goal for Rotten Shadows was to create a genre combo that felt oh so right but seemed virtually untapped: horror and noir. The two genres compliment each other beautifully with their tendencies towards moody darkness and spiraling danger. The idea soon became to take the familiar story of a haunted house and paint a thick coat of noir conventions over it, transforming the tale into something fresh in the process. The obsessive private investigator became a paranormal investigator, and the alluring femme fatal took the form of the house itself. And of course, it wouldn't be horror OR noir without some good ol' fashioned murder.
